Owning It

Happy Thursday Ladies!!  I have a SUPER fun new series for you today and I'm SO excited about it!!  I don't know if you remember, but I did a post back in July confessing some funny, ridiculous, self-deprecating things about myself.  You can check the post out HERE.  I loved all the fun comments.  There are lots of other closet-Nelly fans out there and I LOVE it!  :)  The new series is inspired by that post and it's called, "Owning It...Claiming the Crazy".  I'll be featuring other bloggers who are keepin' it real and having a few "owning it" moments by sharing their crazy here on the blog.

My first featured blogger you guys already know and love just as much as I do!  :)  I asked Shay (at Mix and Match Family) about doing this for me.  Bless her heart!  She started a note on her phone and has been adding to it any time she thought of a funny she could share.  I absolutely LOVE her list and I think you guys will too!!!  So...without further ado...here's Shay "Owning It AND Claiming her Crazy"...

1. I name babies.  I don't know why...but when people tell me that they're having a baby, I start thinking of names for them.  I don't just think of names I like, I ask the parents to be a million questions (family names, themes, letters, alliteration, etc.) and start thinking of names.

So far, I have named 5 of my friends' babies...Bowen, Maggie, Fisher, Beckett and Griffin.  Granted, I probably suggested 4000 names to each of my friends...but five of my friends ended up with names I came up with.

2. I know every lyric to every Barry Manilow song.  I blame my mother.

3. I decided about six months ago that flesh colored bras were boring and that after wearing one for 20+ years, I needed to stop.  I invested in a few colorful bras and now, I wear them every day.  I don't know why but all of a sudden, I realized how unattractive a nude bra is and now I'm rebelling.

4. I cannot dive.  Don't tell me I can and show me how by placing your arms above your head, bending forward and pretending to dive...I cannot dive.  My body just can't.  Don't waste your time.   (This is Erika and I'm now on a mission...Summer of 2015 I WILL teach this girl to dive!!)

5. I can't see the "man in the moon".  My mother gets irritated with me every time I say this but after trying to see it up there for years, I think you people are all crazy.  There is no profile in the moon...it's just a moon (my mother is objecting right this second).

6. Last December, my mom and I were writing out the menu for our Christmas Eve dinner when she asked me why I hold my pen so funny.  I told her that I had been holding my pen that way for 30 years...and she told me it was all wrong (apparently, she wasn't paying attention during my formative years).  So, I started watching You Tube videos on how to properly hold a pen and have been working on it all year.  Apparently, I have been doing it all wrong!  Who knew?!?

7. The phrase "we should go dancing" has never left my mouth.  (Hahahahaha!!!  I LOVE this one!!  It has never left mine as well.  That's probably why we're such good friends.  :))

8. I am a news junkie...but I always read people.com before heading to mainstream news...apparently, celebrity news is more important to me than any other.

9. I typically start listening to Christmas music around my birthday.  My birthday is October 25.  Don't judge.

SHAY!!!  That was SO much fun!!  Thanks so much for sharing your crazy with us!
You can find Shay over at Mix and Match Family where she blogs about her life, her family, and her faith.  And...don't forget to check out Shay's foodie blog  HERE.  Last night I made TWO Mix and Match Mama recipes.  Let me tell you...she doesn't disappoint!

Have a GREAT day friends!!  XOXO

Girl, you will not be able to teach me how to dive. I will fall belly first in the pool like an idiot. My body just cannot move that way. Instead of diving, we can just sit around and talk about how we shouldn't go dancing ;).

Thanks for letting me play today!!

Love this series idea. This was too fun! I hold my pen "wrong" too, but no one told me until it was way too late!

Several things: 1) I can dive...but I HAVE to hold my nose. 2) That man in the moon thing is a lie. There's not one. 3) Erika's going to teach you to dive. I'm going to feed your a couple of margaritas and then Jeni and I are going to kidnap both of you girls and take you dancing.
Love you both!
And Erika....LOVE this fun series, the darling graphic, AND the name of the series!!!! So excited about it!

I can't dive either. I see a rabbit in the moon. My oldest holds his pen wrong and now I'm going to make him watch you tube videos to get it right! Look forward to reading all the crazy things people share.

I love embracing the quirky :) Also - Sheaffer.... if you're holding your nose it's not a dive. Summer 2015 - Erika and I will be holding classes at the Ranch pool. This post cracked me up. LOVE IT!

Aww.... That's so cute how your friends let you pick out there kids names. Bowen was a perfect name for him and Griffin is the cutest name.. My birthday is October 26, what a couencidence ( and I can't spell)😋😂.. Don't fell dumb for listening to Christmas music around that time, a couple of weeks ago I felt like listening to it a have them stuck in my head

Love this!! Great idea. The baby-naming thing is hilarious yet awesome! :)

I don't see the man either, but I can see the rabbit. :). And why dive when you can jump?!

I thought I was the only one left in the world who notices when people hold their pen wrong! My 1st grader comes home holding the pencil incorrectly because she wants to imitate her teacher!! Aaahh!!! Loved your post! Lol

I couldn't dive worth a flip for years either. Until I was 22 (and had a glass of wine in me, don't judge ;) the wine helped that's all I'm saying) what you do is: get on the diving board, at the very edge, squat down like a frog, hand forward and pointed down with head. Then slowly tilt into the pool. Works everytime. I taught my 5 year old also how to dive this way.

I hold my pen wrong as well. I also am a news junkie and will read people.com first. My husband teases me about it. Love this column.

Love this new series...so much fun! Really enjoyed reading about Shay. I could dive maybe 15 years ago, but now that I'm older it's a little scary!
Have a blessed day!!!

Love this!!! I think the man in the moon is a lie! I can't see it either. I only wear a nude bra if I am wearing white or a very light color. Now I have said "we should go dancing". That is so fun!!!

I hold my pen wrong too. Always have. So does my sister-in-law

Ok, here's a fun tip to get a good pencil/pen grip that I use with the kinders I work with:

Lay you pencil on a table in front of you with the tip facing you. Pinch the pencil near the top, about where the yellow starts after it's been sharpened. Keeping it pinched, pick it up and flip the eraser up towards you, bending your wrist up. You will be in a perfect pencil grip! Called "pinch and flip". :)

Too funny! I just started reading both of your blogs. What a fun topic!

On the bras. I KNOW nude is so boring and ugly. But it is the only one that doesn't show through. So... do we not care about that? Is it time to let that go? Is this like when my mom can't let go of the fact that I don't wear pantyhose? AM I BECOMING MY MOTHER?

What a fun series! This was so hilarious. I also can't dive - although I guess I've never tried. But I'm quite sure I would end up belly flopping. And I have never, and will never, suggest going dancing. That's like my worst nightmare. The only thing worse would being on that show "Naked and Afraid".

Lisa Sipka said...

Oh and "we should go dancing" - never. I always take my own car in case someone else says that dreaded phrase.

Love it....what a fun new series! I hold scissors upside down....and never knew it until about 10 years ago but I STILL catch myself doing it....it just makes too much sense that the thumb would go in the smaller hole. :)

Shay, I always thought it looked like a K-STATE wildcat in the moon. Look for that next time! :)

This was fun! I can not dive either. Never have been able to and prob never will. Don't really care. :) I just found Shay's blog a couple days ago and now found yours. Love them both! Cant wait to read more!

Love this post, so fun! Can't wait to see more from other people. Can't dive, my husband can't either and it's the funniest thing to watch him try. Haha, colored bras...I'm a nude bra girl myself. Maybe when I'm done nursing I'll go find some fun ones too :)

Love this idea for a fun new series. It's all about being proud and loving who we each are. Love it!

If you like reading People.com then you should totally watch Hot Topics from Wendy Williams. She posts her segment on YouTube every night at 6 pm and that right there is some good entertainment!

I am cracking up over here AND starting my own list. I am quite a unique (weird) individual and I own it. Loving it.

I love this series! I can't dive either. lol! And I pretty much listen to Christmas music year round :)

Amanda said...

I love this list. My mom said something similar to me just recently about how she can't understand how I write the way I do :).

As far as diving, I taught swimming lessons for several years. How I tell everyone to dive is to float a pool noodle a few feet from the pool edge. Then think of falling into the pool headfirst without touching the noodle. I'm telling you it always works....even for the belly floppers :).

Sara F. said...

My dad used to get on me all the time about how I held my pencil. The funny thing is, I've always kind of been known for my awesome handwriting. I say, who cares how you hold the writing utensil if the end result looks fabulous! :-)

This is great! Shay, you have convinced me to go colorful underneath, but what do you do about wearing light colored tops??
BTW, you and I are Birthday Twinkies...October 25!!! It's the best day to have been born! 😉

Narci said...

Oh my goodness! hahaha!! I am so confused that you can't dive? Is this related to the fact that I can't pose and jump off the diving board? So funny! :)

I am so happy I am not the only person that knows the lyrics to every Barry Manilow song!

Erika, this is a great series! So much fun.
Shea, I hold my pen all wrong too. You're not alone. :) I figured that it's been working out ok for me for 30+ years, so why change now?!
