What's Up Wednesday

I'm joining MelShay, and Sheaffer for their What's Up Wednesday link-up!

What we're eating this week:

Monday:  These Steak and Wedge Burgers were on the menu.  You know my favorite thing about making burgers for dinner?  Not one person complains!  All my people love a burger!

Tuesday: Crockpot Enchilada word...EASY!!!  My favorite dinners to make are all easy!

Wednesday: Chicken Chipotle Fettuccine is up tonight!

Thursday:  LEFTOVER NIGHT!!!

Friday:  We're going OUT!

What I'm Reminiscing About:
My mama heart is still reminiscing about this day.  The day we got our girl.  As you can see, we've come a LONG way!  Britt's a super happy baby.  She loves her family.  She's a great eater and sleeper (except naps..she's not a fan...who needs to nap.  ha!).  Everyday we notice something she can now do and all five of us get excited about it.  To see our past Bringing Home Britt posts...

What I'm Loving:
All the summer fun we've been having.  This was a big trip to the grocery store complete with kiddos pushing kid carts and me forgetting my list.  Remember me telling you about that Super Mom moment I had at Costco?  Well, this trip would be the opposite of that.  hahaha!  As crazy as the grocery store run was...I LOVE having these people home with me.

Even though Britt's face doesn't show it, we've been loving hanging out with friends.  The Shulls came over for a cookout/swimming last weekend.  Again despite her look, Britt had fun and so did the other five.  :)

What We've Been Up To:
Summer sports...this is the first year my big kids have played a summer sport.  We've been having practices and games throughout the week.  I'm a bit tired from the shuffling, but Nixon is having a blast.  He can't get enough sports so it's perfect for him.  The verdict on Ebby Lee and her summer sport is still out.  ;)

And Miss Britt has been so stylish in all her new clothes.

On Saturday it was rainy and just a bit yucky in the morning.  Tab suggested we take a little drive outside of town.  He remembered someone mentioning this great catfish place.  That's just what we did.  We took about an hour drive outside of town and found Stacy's Catfish.  (Growing up, I worked at a catfish restaurant on the lake so this place brought back so many memories!).

Britt refused the fried catfish so she enjoyed a squeezie pouch of spinach, peas, and pears.  Sound delicious?

And because we couldn't get enough of the selfies while everyone finished their food.

Fried catfish, fried shrimp, fried okra, french you see the theme?  Definitely wasn't the healthiest of meals, but it was so tasty!  A little country dinner was just what we needed.

What I'm Dreading:
This is me.  All day.  Every day.

What I'm Working On:
Shay and I have been busy bees working at Mix and Match Travel.  We've been busy planning trips for lots of you.  (Cruises, Mexico, Disney World)  The 2018 pricing for Walt Disney World just released so if you're thinking of planning a trip in 2018, now is the time to reach out.  Please e-mail us at  We'd love to help plan a magical trip for your family.

What I'm Excited About:
All the Fourth of July festivities!

What I'm watching/reading:
This is me when I think about what comes on television TONIGHT!!!

You guys know I'm a big fan of Big Brother.  Tonight is the premier and I can't WAIT to watch!

When it comes to reading, I've been such a slacker.  I never know when I'll have enough time to finish a book so I'm just not even starting.  My list of books to read is GROWING so I need to get on this.  Maybe tomorrow?  Big Brother is on tonight!  ;)

What I'm Listening To:
We're listening to all kinds of music.  If we're out back at the pool, then you better believe we have the speakers and music turned up!

What I'm Wearing:

I have three summer looks....
Look #1 Swimsuit and Coverup

Look #3 Church Wear  (My dress is here 40% off.)

That's pretty much what I'm sporting all summer long.  Sometimes I combine two of the Monday evening at Ebby Lee's game I looked like I'd just climbed out of the pool but I was wearing workout clothes.  haha!  That's what summer's all about.  Right?

What I'm Doing This Weekend:
Lots of this, but imagine four kids jumping and splashing around in the water too.

What I'm Looking Forward to Next Month:
We have some fun summer things planned but lots more lazy summer days and nights.  :)

See you on Friday for more Friday Favorites!

Bringing Home Britt-Part 6

On Friday evening we arrived in Guangzho, for our last big stay before we headed home.

Big bed, little baby.  :)

Saturday morning was Britt's medical appointment.  Our guide strongly suggested just one parent take Britt and the rest of the group stay back.  So Tab and Britt headed to her appointment while the other kiddos and I stayed back at the hotel.

She did great at the appointment and they were back rather early.  We headed out for a little adventure.  We found this amazing park just a quick walk from our hotel.

Our hotel had one western restaurant...a delicious Italian restaurant close by.  On our walk there for lunch, we spotted this restaurant that had turtles swimming around in an aquarium out front.

The Italian spot was delicious!  And then it was a quick walk to a really cool park.

I don't remember the name of the park but it was HUGE!

It was a great spot to get out ALL THE ENERGY!

There was a big section full of carnival rides.  The Slaughter kids were big fans!

Bowen decided he'd look twelve on this day.  Ha!  Right?

We had a great afternoon strolling around the park.

We headed back to the hotel, I got showered for dinner, and we took a cab over to 1920, a German restaurant.  We stayed at the Marriott, which was about a five to ten minute cab ride over to The Garden Hotel (which I'd say is where most adoptive families was surrounded by much more western-things.)

Tab sat in front with the driver.  These bars were too funny.

Miss Britt was a big fan of the German restaurant.  And her mama was too.

Everyone wanted their picture with Britt.

We stuffed ourselves with pretzels, sausages, schnitzel, mashed potatoes, and (my personal favorite) sauerkraut.  YUMMY!

We rode the escalator a time or two before calling it a night.

Britt would wave like a crazy lady on this escalator so we did it over and over again.

Can you spot her little hand?  *Sorry for the picture overload, it was just sweet.

Two sisters all ready for bed.

Sunday morning was SHOPPING DAY!  Our plan was to do a little shopping at the Pearl Market.  Then head to Shamian Island for a little more shopping.

Have I mentioned before I have a very sensitive nose?  It's the kind of thing Tab will make fun of because I'm crazy sensitive to smells.  Well, this pearl market was NOT the place to be sensitive to smells.  I can't even describe the smell AND it was incredibly warm inside which made the smells worse.  All that to say, we shopped as quickly as human possible and were ready for our next stop.

Our guide took a TON of pictures and eyes are closed in every single picture.  But this is our new normal for a bit so I kind of love this picture.  Pure chaos but completely blessed chaos.  :)

Shamian Island is where all the adoptions used to take place in China so it's a special spot to visit.  And this is a photo op for all adopted kiddos.  Britt was so comfortable in the carrier so we decided to improvise.  :)

This area was gorgeous and very southern looking with the big trees.  We met a ton of adopted families.  One family in particular that lives just fifteen minutes away.  Super cool to see all kinds of American families growing their families this way.

At this point, Bowen would put his arms around anyone who wanted a picture.  haha!

We got some souvenirs, had lunch at Lucy's (a staple on the island), and then headed back to our hotel.

Britt took a little dip in the pool.  She liked it for about twelve seconds and then was over it.  I can't blame her.  The water was way too cold for me.

We preferred to sit pool side and watch.  (And I'm doing that thing where I over compensate smiling for the kiddo with me.  WHY do I do that?!)

The big kids and Tab swam while we snacked under the umbrella.

At this point in our trip we were SO ready to head back to Texas with our girl.  We'd had great attitudes about everything up until this point and we just hit a wall.  We were ready to be home!  As you can tell from the pictures, Britt was adjusting so well.  She ate what we gave her, slept (not consistently) at night, and napped everyday.  We were just all ready to sleep in our own beds, eat American food, and show Britt her new home.

I have one final China post and then our Welcome Home post to share.  I've gotten a ton of e-mails and messages about adoption.  My plan is to answer questions in a separate post.  If you have an adoption question, please e-mail me at  I've shared before that I want to keep some of Britt's story private, but at the same time I want to shout at the rooftops just how amazing adoption is.  This little girl has BLESSED us in so many ways!  Please send any questions and I'll be working on a Q and A Adoption post.

I'm trying to post more frequently on Instagram.  Please follow along with us at "slaughteren".

Thanks for stopping by today!  Happy Monday!

Friday Favorites

Happy Happy Friday!

As excited as I am to see Friday, it also means one more week of summer gone.  Sigh.

I'm joining my girls, Narci and Andrea, to share our FAVORITES on a Friday.  :)

I have a big batch of random favorites for you this week...
First up, if you're an adopted mom or know someone who is...get them this devotional!  I highly recommend it.  I had a sweet friend gift it to me and I'm loving it.  And if you have any other recommendations, PLEASE share!

A little time in the sun by the pool is my FAVORITE.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know this weekend my man pulled through for us.  ha!  Last week was a long week with camps, Backyard Bible Club, practices, and Tab out of town.  Friday the kiddos and I were dressed to meet some friends at the pool when Tab called to say...LET'S HEAD TO THE GAYLORD THIS AFTERNOON!

The Gaylord Texan is just a thirty minute drive.  They have amazing Christmas decorations we frequently check out, but we'd never spent the night or visited in the summer.  So we popped over to enjoy the water park, spend the night and most of the day, then we drove back on Saturday evening.  Let me tell was just what I needed.

These four were stoked about our little staycation.

We checked in, dropped our bags, and caught the shuttle to the water park.

Miss Britt is a FAN of the water!

Our room had a great view of the hotel's atrium.

Two Slaughter girls all clean and ready for bed.

Only in Texas can you see a giant pair of boots used as a play area for kids.

This whole family of six thing is cramping our style in the hotel room department.  haha!  We don't fit anymore!   On this stay we had a one bedroom suite.  The three big kiddos all slept on the fold out couch.  (I'm sure it was a bit crowded but no one likes being the one kid out so they ALWAYS choose to all sleep together.)  Tab, Britt, and I slept in the king size bed.

On Saturday morning, Tab had a football meeting in Ft. Worth, so the plan was for the kids and I to stay and enjoy the water park while he did that.  For some reason, Nixon thought the football meeting would be fun.  He insisted on going (and later decided that decision was all wrong...ha!  He said fifteen minutes in he realized he'd made the wrong choice.).

Bowen would pop up out of the water slide and declare, "THAT WAS AWESOME!".  Every.  Single.  Time.

Britt did GREAT!  She's a big fan of the water.  We played in the kid area, would go around on the lazy river, and then head to the big pool so Ebby Lee and Bowen could do the water slide and zip lines.  We did this pattern over and over again.  Britt fell asleep in the pool while I was holding her.  The second I laid her down she was up, but she never got cranky-even without her nap.

We had chips and dip, chicken strips, and smoothies...GREAT day at the water park.

She was mesmerized by this little pinwheel.  And have I mentioned how her little tan is my FAVORITE?  There's not much I love more than tan lines in those little baby wrists!  AHH!

We were walking around the water park and I bumped into this sweet reader, Kajsa from Pittsburgh!  She was absolutely precious.  We chatted for a bit and even Miss Britt was excited about our selfie.

Can you spot Bowen?  This area was perfect for Bowen's age.  Ebby Lee could hang here too, but Bowen could have played for days.  Big props to my FAVORITE guy for making our weekend so special!

Check out how CUTE this blanket is?!  Isn't it darling?  Tab's football crew sent it to us after welcoming Britt home and I couldn't love it more.  I asked Rebecca where she got it because I knew you guys would want to know.  She got it from this shop on Etsy.  SO CUTE!

If you missed it, I shared some cute workout gear that keeps me moving and then we chatted at home workouts on Tuesday.  You guys had lots of great recommendations for ways to get moving at home.  Check out the comments!

A FAVORITE verse.  :)

A BIG HAPPY FATHER'S DAY shout out to this guy!  He brings the fun everyday.  He keeps us laughing, makes us all work harder, and is our biggest supporter.  He works so hard to provide, spoils us all, and leads us all to Christ.  We love this guy big and celebrated him with burgers after church on Sunday.  And then steaks for dinner.  :)

These cuties wanted me to remind you about the comfy Tucker + Tate line for kids.  You can see all their clothes details here.

Tuesday, Britt and I got my hair done and ran some errands.  I thought I'd save time and have a smoothie instead of sitting down and stopping for a meal.  I was laughing so hard because I clearly ordered wrong and instead of it being a regular "meal replacement" smoothie I'm certain this was a "Thanksgiving meal replacement".

Right after the Thanksgiving smoothie, Britt and I were doing a little shopping.  The sales woman walked up and started talking to Britt (being so sweet).  Britt buried her head in my shoulder and the sales lady said, "Oh, you just want your mama".  Super simple statement, but it meant so much.  For the past four and a half weeks I've been doing everything I can to get this sweet baby to know I'm her mama.  So for a stranger to witness a little proof....well, let me just say it made my day!  God used this sales lady to speak into my heart.  In the midst of this new family of six it's sometimes hard to see how far we've come and that sweet lady reminded me.

My blogger and real life friend, Olivia, dropped off some goodies at our house when we got back with Britt.  I must tell you she didn't want me to share these but I insisted because they were so cute.  I know some of you ladies might be looking for great gifts for adopted mamas and I highly recommend these.

This coffee mug is so special and she can customize it just for you.  You can see all the goodies in her shop.

She knew my mama of four self would be wearing all the tees this summer and she just started making these in her shop.  Olivia is one of the sweetest people I know.  If you're looking for a special gift, check her out!  And she blogs too over at Joyfully Prudent.  :)  Word on the street is, she's got a GIVEAWAY happening today!  THANK YOU, Olivia!

Thank you guys for stopping by today!  Hope you have a great weekend!  XO
